7 Easy Plants That Actually Like Neglect

By Planthead Team · Jun 2, 2026

Some plants need a strict schedule. These ones don't.

If you forget to water for a week (or three), the following plants will not only forgive you — they'll actively prefer it. Overwatering kills more houseplants than drought ever will.

1. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

The ZZ plant is basically a houseplant on autopilot. Thick, waxy leaves store water in underground rhizomes, which means it can go a month between drinks without flinching. Low light? Fine. Bright indirect? Also fine. The only way to kill it is to love it too much.

Care cheat sheet: Water every 3–4 weeks. Any light. Don't mist. Don't fuss.

2. Snake Plant (Sansevieria)

Snake plants are tanks. They tolerate dim corners, dry air, and forgetful owners. Bonus: they're one of the few plants that release oxygen at night.

3. Pothos

A trailing classic. Yellow when thirsty, perky when happy. Tells you exactly what it needs without throwing a tantrum.

4. Cast Iron Plant

Named for a reason. It survives almost anything short of being set on fire.

5. Aglaonema

Colorful, chill, and happy in low light. The introvert of the plant world.

6. Philodendron

Vining or upright, philodendrons are extremely forgiving and grow fast enough to feel rewarding.

7. Spider Plant

The gateway plant. Cheap, fast-growing, and makes babies you can give away.

The takeaway: "low-maintenance" doesn't mean no-maintenance. It means the plant will tell you when something's wrong instead of dying silently. Start here, build confidence, then move on to your first fussy diva.
